The purpose and usage Lappeenranta University of Technology runs an investment program to modernize testing facilities especially related to research in high-speed applications. One of the main aspects is to build up a test bench that is capable for back-to-back testing up to 2000 kW power at 15126 rpm. The test bench includes a high-speed gear with a ratio 1: 4,088 and loading machine that can operate as a generator or motor. Application specific requirements Because of the application, loading machine must be manufactured and designed so that it can operate: • In both directions of rotation (in Clockwise and in Counterclockwise) • Operate as a generator or a motor mode. • With nominal torque in a speed range 610 – 2940 rpm without any derating. External cooling fans are preferred for inner air circulation. • With any modern two-level inverter with PWM modulation. • Continuous 2100 kW power in field weakening area up to 3700 rpm.It is preferred that the loading machine is a modular induction machine with air to water heat exchanger. The pole number of the machine can be defined by supplier, preferred pole numbers are 2, 4 or 6. A rib cooled machine is also accepted but only with an external cooling fan.
