Denmark – Detection apparatus – Acquisition of a QQQ-ICPMS (Triple Quadrupole Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer) and HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) setup to Geobiologi Laboratoriet, Globe

The Geobiology Laboratory at the Globe Institute explores the impact of organisms on the chemical and physical Earth. Specific focus is on trace metal cycling and how the availavility of bioessential metals influence biological productivity today and in the past. This work requires geochemical characterizations of modern environment, controlled laboratory experiments (incl. synthetic products) and geological materials (incl. fossils and sedimentary rocks). The Geobiology Laboratory at the Globe Institute, University of Copenhagen, proposes the acquisition of a Triple-Quad Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (QQQ-ICPMS) paired with a High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC). This purchase is driven by the laboratory's need to conduct advanced analytical work, including: 1. Trace Metal Concentration Analyses in Acidic Solutions: Essential for our ongoing research into environmental and biological systems. Critical for our studies, require high sensitivity and precise quantification of uranium concentrations in hydrochloric solution to better than 1 ng/L in solution. 2. Isotope Ratio Analyses of Lithium, Boron, Sulphur, and Strontium: Critical for our studies, requiring 2 SD reproducibility of pure ICP standards better than 0.5‰ for 7Li/6Li, 0.5‰ for 11B/10B, 1‰ for 34S/32S, and 1‰ for 87Sr/86Sr, to achieve precise measurements in acidic solutions. 3. Organometals in Organic Solvents: To expand our research capabilities into new areas of geobiology. 4. In addition, accurate measurements of rare elements by isotope-dilution (incl. stable-isotope-doping and PGEs) will be performed with minimal additions of rare isotopes (incl. stable, non-radiogenic 63Cu, 100Mo, 233U, 236U and 232U).
